Yummy Grilled Cheese Roll-Ups are a fun twist on a classic grilled cheese sandwich that everyone will love!
Cheese is rolled up into plain bread and then pan-fried in a little bit of butter! The cheese inside gets all melty and the bread on the outside gets all crispy…what’s not to love?
Easy Cheesy Snack
Grilled cheese sandwiches were my high school cafeteria favorite (with lots of pickles and ketchup for dipping!) and they’re still in my top favorite lunches.
- Everyone loves this easy recipe because grilled cheese roll-ups are perfectly portable and dippable!
- Serve on their own or served with a bowl of hot tomato soup. It’s the ultimate comfort food combo!
- These roll-ups can be cooked in a pan or even the air fryer (and reheat well).
- This is a super easy basic 3 ingredient grilled cheese roll-up recipe but you can add a slice of ham or some crumbled bacon to change it up!
Ingredients & Variations
BREAD Use basic, thin sandwich bread, preferably the kind without added nuts or grains. Taco-sized flour tortillas (6” to 8”) will work, too!
CHEESE Any cheese that works for grilled cheese works for cheese roll-ups; slices are more uniform, but cheese can be shredded as well.
Sharp cheddar is the traditional variety, but Monterey Jack, Colby, Swiss, or any blend of shredded cheese will do. Cream cheese can be softened and seasoned with some Italian or Taco Seasoning.
ADD-INS Bacon bits, chopped spinach, finely diced green apples, diced green chiles, and even a little splash of hot sauce are all delicious add-ins!
How to Make Grilled Cheese Roll-Ups
Just roll ’em up and enjoy!
- Roll out slices of bread. Top with a slice of cheese or a small scoop of shredded cheese.
- Roll up in the bread (as per the recipe below).
- Brush the outside with butter & grill or air fry until golden crispy.
In the Air Fryer: An air fryer makes great grilled cheese sandwiches, and these rollups are great in an air fryer too! Prepare grilled cheese roll-ups as directed. Air fry in a single layer at 390°F until golden brown.
PRO TIP: Secure the rolls with a toothpick before cooking to hold everything together!
Tips for the Best Roll Up
- Fresh bread works best, older bread can be a bit dry and crack when it is rolled.
- Start cooking sealed side down. Once they’ve browned, they will hold together (and toothpicks can be removed for more eve cooking if desired).
- Additional butter may need to be added as the roll-ups cook.
- Keep leftover grilled cheese roll-ups in a zippered bag in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat them in a dry pan on the stove or in the air fryer.
- Bread crusts can be dried and crushed into bread crumbs for future recipes.
Serve a pile of grilled cheese roll-ups with some Marinara Sauce, a BBQ Sauce, Buttermilk Ranch Dressing, and some healthy sides like these colorful fruit kabobs, or this fruit salad.

We love these so does our grandson he is only 2 he loves them with marinara sauce to dip them in
Have you tried them in an air fryer? I wonder if that would work?!
We’ve never tried it, but I’m sure it’d work. Take a look at the air fryer grilled cheese for an idea of the method. Let us know if you try these rollups in the air fryer Anna!
My soon to be two year old loved these! She won’t eat regular squared grilled cheese, she has become very picky. Thanks for the great idea!! We dipped these in spagettios (:
What a great combo for kiddies! So happy she loves the roll ups Hannah!
I made these for my picky toddler and they were a success! I took a bite too . Thank you so much for this great recipe!
Can I make as is, freeze then defrost & warm when needed
I haven’t tried freezing these but I think it would work. The exterior will be soft rather than crisp.
bread as in toast??
Not toasted, just regular sandwich bread.
your recipes look really easy and fun. grand kids would love to do this. got to try some today
thanks
I do these with flour tortillas and use Hebrew hot dogs and roll them with sharp cheddar
I will make these for the 4TH of july party on the top of the mountain!
I’ve made these for years, however, I leave the crust on, roll up the bread with a slice of cheese inside and wrap it with bacon using toothpicks to hold the bacon on. Make certain to cover the crusts with the bacon. Then I broil them until browned on all sides, We call them Bacon rolls.
That sounds WONDERFUL! I am going to give it a try!
Would this work with Pita Wraps?
I haven’t tried it that way… if you do, please let us know how it works out for you!
