Chocolate Banana Bread – forget Double Chocolate Banana Bread, we are making Triple Chocolate Banana Bread! Deliciously decadent and easy to make, it’s so good you’re going to start buying extra bananas to ripen just so you can make this!
How to Make Chocolate Banana Bread
Double Chocolate Banana Bread has loads of cocoa, filled with chocolate chips, and drizzled with a chocolate topping. Bananas are great in sweets like banana cookies and of course this recipe takes chocolate chip banana bread to a whole new level.
Quick breads (such as banana bread or muffins) are breads that don’t require yeast and there are a few simple tips that will ensure you get great results every time!
- Do not overmix. Over mixing the batter will make your bread dense and chewy. Fold the wet/dry mixtures by hand just until combined.
- Grease and flour your pan (and double check you’re using the correct sized pan asked for in the recipe).
- Bake quick breads on the middle rack of your oven.
- Insert a toothpick in the middle about 10 minutes before you expect the bread to be done to test for doneness. Overbaking will cause a dry loaf.
- Quick breads can be frozen up to 3 months in a freezer bag or sealed container. (If desired, glaze once defrosted)
Chocolate Banana Bread Ingredients
This recipe contains Half and Half. Half & half is a dairy product sold in most North American supermarkets. It is made up of half cream and half whole milk and will be found in the dairy case. You can generally substitute any light cream in its place (approximately 10-12% MF) or create your own mixture using heavy cream and milk.
My Triple Chocolate Banana Bread recipe also uses regular cocoa powder, not Dutch-processed cocoa powder. There is a difference between the two, Dutch-processed is not acidic and doesn’t react with the ingredients the same way as regular cocoa.
Last Minute Tips
Be sure to check your chocolate banana bread at 45-50 minutes to make sure it doesn’t over bake! If you aren’t freezing your banana bread, you’ll want to store it sealed in the refrigerator. If you prefer nuts in your chocolate banana bread, nuts (such as walnuts) can be substituted for the chocolate chips in this recipe.

More great ways to enjoy ripe bananas:
THIS IS SO GOOD!!I USUALLY SHARE WITH OTHERS, NOT THIS. THANKS FOR THE RECIPE.
Thank you! I had some ripe bananas, but wanted something different than plain banana bread. This recipe delivered! Makes me want to buy another bunch of bananas, let them get over-ripe, and make a double batch in a bunt pan like another commenter did.
Hello Holly,
My name is Michael Kinzer and I want you to know that I made your Warm Apple Pie Bread and also your Chocolate Banana Bread. Now I have a question for you. Are we suppose to wait for the bread to come to a complete cool or can we put the topping on it while it is warm? Right now I will wait for it to cool off before topping it off with the chocolate drizzle.
Now for the Apple pie bread: first I chopped the apples using two of them. I think that I chopped them too much. Second, I shifted the flour with the amount needed for the recipe; not knowing that I had to remeasure the amount that I needed. It was a complete mess, dough was to thick and would not pour. Threw that away and didn’t shift the second batch great results. Had to spoon it into the bread pan and try to smooth it out. Had to bake a little longer than 40 minutes. When I put the melted butter on top, cimmamon sugar would come off the top. The first two slices came apart between the two layers. Too warm. After it was cooled off I gave two slices to my wife and she loves it. So great job.
I let the bread cool, as well as the topping, so the topping doesn’t melt into it.
I am so glad you are enjoying the quick bread recipes Michael!
Really moist delicious easy to follow recipe the girls loved it
Thanks
This bread looks amazingly delicious . Can’t wait to try it. The picture of the bread looks low and wide? What kind of pan do you use if I may ask? I use a 9 x5 inch loaf pan. But mine is kind of skinny and taller it seems. Also. Could this recipe be used to make muffins? Of so. How would I adjust the baking time? Thank you for posting this super delicious looking recipe. So excited to make it for both of my grandkids.
This is baked in a 9×5 pan, you can find this information in step 1. It could likely be baked in a muffin pan but is a bit denser than a muffin as it is intended to be bread so it can be sliced without falling apart. I can’t say for sure on the time but I would start checking them around 20 minutes for a regular muffin pan.
I do A LOT of baking myself. There’s one very important ingredient that is missing from this recipe.
VANILLA. 1 t. will work.
We use Vanilla in the topping but it would be a delicious addition to the banana bread batter as well.
Have you doubled the recipe to make a Bundt cake?
We’ve never tried making this chocolate banana bread in a bundt pan, so can’t say for sure. Let us know if you try it Tracy!
I had to double the recipe due to having 7 bananas that were ripe. So I put the batter in a Bundt pan and it worked wonderfully! My kids and husband absolutely love it!
Sounds amazing Cynthia! Baked bundt breads are so pretty too!
Since this is my 6th or so time coming back to, and making this recipie I figured I should stop in and thank you for it! Haha. I love it. I share it often. I think the only thing I ever do is an extra banana haha they always so small!
I can blame 1/3 of my left thigh on this wonderful bread!! <3
I am so glad you enjoy this recipe, Melissa!
Holly, i made this cake 4 /Mothrs day in 3 minis, 2 were sold, and the third went to the adult daughter of a very dear long time frend!
I can only tell you that the adult daughter swooned ver this cake, but i made freeze half for anothre day and not the ntire thing at one time! She had forgotten it was in the freezer, until 1 day she was looking for a treat, opened the freezer, and much to her delight, found the frozen and enjoyed that even more!
i have someone now who wants to buy this cake, after seeing my pics, and being a chocoholic like me, so i will make it later this week again, and i’m sure shell also be delighted! thx so much for sharing so many wonderful recipes:): kelli
So happy this recipe was such a hit, Kelli! I would love to be surprised with a delicious leftover slice of cake too! That sounds like the perfect end to a day.
Is it a cake or a loaf bread? I’ve been reading comments where some women have been calling this a cake?
It’s somewhere in between a cake and a bread.
Hey!! This smells so good baking! What can I substitute for half and half, if i don’t have any on hand? Would almond milk work, or regular milk be better?
Thanks for the great recipe!
Hey Sara, regular milk would probably be better than almond milk but any light cream would work as a good substitute.
I have to try the triple chocolate banana bread! Sounds yummy
Going to make this tomorrow
Love them
hi, i’ve just made 3 minis as i mentioned earlier, and b4 these are given away, i’m reading the topping directions and looked at your video which is so fast, i dont feel very confident about making it! you say at the end, when cool, is tht the cake or the topping you’re referring to??you say not to stir the chips, and yet you seem to be stirring immediately!!
i bake almost daily to gift friends, neighbors, 1st responders, and yet this is my 1st sale and i’d like it to be perfct, so if u could kindly reply immediately, i’d be forever indebted!! thx:): kelli
Hi Kelli, I let the bread cool, as well as the topping, so the topping doesn’t melt into it. Thank you for passing this chocolate banana bread to everyone!
they look/smell great; just waiting 4 topping too cool down, but since they’ll all be transported, dont know abut a cover?? have u ever transported them away from home??
topping is thinckening as it cools, so think its the best crowning top any chocoholic would adore:): thx Holly
I have not Kelli. If possible, I’d put them in a container large enough that the topping isn’t touched by the cover, or I’d wrap the bottoms with foil, leaving the top open.
hey Holly, looking for a nana bread with lots of chocolate, so made 3 minis, 1 for this friend, and 2 to see, for the fitst time!! they’re almost ready to remove and look beautiful, but not sure how to upload pics from my fone to your site???will definitely fotogragh and try, but unless my friend offeres me a slice, wont be able to tell u how it was; but will try!! thx for this and a few others i will try:): kelli
All the recipes sounds great and look even better.
