Homemade Onion Soup Mix

We love having this homemade onion soup mix ready to go. My brother in law is allergic to MSG, so it’s always great to have an easy seasoning on hand when we are entertaining for him!

This homemade onion soup mix is great in soups like chicken noodle soup, but it works for just about anything you want to add some flavor to. Grilled chicken breasts, 4 Ingredient Chicken Rice Casserole, you name it!

What Is In Onion Soup Mix

Homemade onion soup mix will almost always contain the following:

  • onion flakes
  • beef bouillon granules
  • onion powder
  • paprika
  • garlic powder

I like to add black pepper to my homemade onion soup mix. With pepper, it’s important to make sure it’s finely ground. If it has big granules, it will not mix into the seasoning well!

How To Make Onion Soup Mix

To make this homemade onion soup mix:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl
  2. Pour mixture into an airtight container and store

Homemade onion soup mix will last in your cupboard for up to 6 months. On the bottom of the jars, I write the date they expire so I know how long they are good for! (Oil or hand sanitizer will remove sharpie from glass when you’re done with it).

This homemade onion soup mix can be used to replace an envelope of Lipton Onion Soup Mix in recipes! It’s great for meatloaf, chicken and french onion dip.  And of course to make a simple onion soup!

Ingredients  

  • cup onion flakes
  • 7 tablespoons beef bullion granules
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions 

  • Combine all ingredient and seal in an airtight container.
  • Store in the cupboard up to 6 months.
  • Five tablespoons = 1 packet of soup mix

Notes

5 tablespoons = 1 packet of soup mix

  1. Made this today. I did make a few tweaks. I caramelized then dehydrated my own onions. I used 6 tbsp of sodium free beef bouillon and added 1 tbsp of Worcestershire powder. I’d consider reducing that next time or just using a bit more sour cream to even out the tanginess of the dip.

    Thanks so much for sharing your recipe. I’ve been wanting to get brave enough to make my own for years now.

  2. I made this using regular beef bouillon and the suggested 5 T to equal a pkt of onion soup mix was way too salty, so I finally found sodium-free beef bouillon online and added the new batch to the previously made. Now, I’m excited to put it into tonight’s burgers! I’m very happy!5 stars

  3. I made this today for your 4 Ingredient Chicken & Rice (to go with our black eyed peas on New Year’s Day). What a pleasure to have a mix without all that extra salt. I usually avoid recipes that call for onion soup mix because of the excess salt issue. No more! This Texan loves it – it’s a keeper for sure.5 stars

  4. This is a great money saver. Much cheaper to make then buying the boxed mix. I make a large batch and keep it in a sealed jar in my pantry. I use it in Chicken recipes and for Pork and Beef roasts. Also great for making roasted potatoes and vegetables. Thank you for another great money saving recipe!5 stars

  5. don’t know if this has been asked…can onion powder be used in place of minced onion? some of my family doesn’t like the texture of them but do like the flavor. thank you for any help

    1. Hi Nadine, we have never tried this recipe with homemade vegetable stock powder but would love to hear how it turns out! Since this is made with beef bouillon granules the flavor will change if using vegetable stock powder instead but it should still be delicious.

  7. First, the recipe tastes exactly like Lipton Onion Soup mix. However, I wonder if I did something wrong. I have to make everything gluten free, so I purchased Knorr Flavored Bouillon. After making it, I made some French Onion Dip. I put in the 5 T’s of the Knorr Bouillon and 2 C’s non-fat yogurt. I could barely eat it, because it was way too salty. I did happen to have more yogurt. So I had to use 4 cups of yogurt to the 5 T’s of mix. To make a long story short, what brand of bouillon do you use? I’m hopeful that whatever you used, will be gluten free. Otherwise, I will just use 2.5 T’s whenever I use it.

    1. We often use Knorr brand as well. You may be able to find a gluten-free beef bouillon that has a reduced-sodium amount though. Good luck!!
