This fluffy Jello Salad is a fun and fruity side dish that could actually pass for a dessert! A rich creamy base, lots of berries and of course Jello make this salad a welcome addition to any meal.
We love that it needs just minutes of prep and is as pretty as it is delicious!
How to Make Jell-o Salad
Although some Jell-o salads are made in a jello mold, this one is more like a fluff (similar to ambrosia salad). It’s rich, creamy, and dreamy.
- Rinse the berries and dry well. Slice strawberries if needed.
- Combine cottage cheese and jello powder in a large mixing bowl.
- Stir in remaining ingredients and refrigerate.
Ingredients in Jello Salad
JELLO: We use strawberry jello but raspberry jello (or really any fruity flavored gelatin) will work. Choose something red or pink for this recipe.
COTTAGE CHEESE: We love cottage cheese in this salad (and even those who don’t care for cottage cheese love it). You can substitute cream cheese or cool whip.
FRUIT: Fresh berries are perfect in this recipe, use one kind or many kinds of berries if you can. Sometimes we do just sliced strawberries for a strawberry jello salad.
Variations
-
- Flavors: Try other flavors of jello and fruits like orange, pineapple or cherry.
- Additions: Add in your favorites from pecans to sliced bananas.
- Looking to lighten this recipe up a little bit? You can use sugar-free in this recipe and choose low fat whipped topping and cottage cheese.
Jello Salad Recipe Tips:
- Any type of fresh berries can be used in this recipe. You will need a total of ~4 cups of fresh mixed berries.
- When combining the cottage cheese with the jello powder, mix with a hand mixer to make the consistency of the cottage cheese a little bit smoother. Mix with a spoon if you prefer more texture.
- Refrigerate before serving to allow the flavors to blend and thicken the fluff.
- I have tested this with freshly whipped cream and while it is delicious, it doesn’t set up as well.
- You can freeze jello salad and serve it frozen in squares (like we do with our Cherry Fluff Salad)
This fluffy jello fruit salad can be served as a side dish or as a dessert. I love to spoon it on angel food cake as a topping too!

I’m intrigued about the idea of using jello powder with cold ingredients. I thot the hot ingredient (water) was needed to dissolve the granules. I’m giving it five stars in faith.
I can’t wait for you to try it Cheri!
can you use anything else besides cottage cheese???
You can substitute cream cheese or cool whip Gina. Enjoy!
LOVE this salad! This salad is super easy to make and so yummy! I used low-fat cottage cheese and lite whipped topping with excellent results.
Loved this!!
The Berry Fluff salad is wonderful’. My guests all enjoyed it and asked for the recipe. I gave it to them. Very pretty as well. I bought a bowl at the dollar store to serve it in. Worked out really well! I follow your recipes a lot and say you are my first go to first for whatever I am looking for. Thank you for all your good thoughts.
Holly, add a little cream cheese (room temp) to the freshly whipped cream and it will better simulate setting up like Cool Whip does. :)
Great tip, thanks Daniel!
Very delicious, left out the marshmallows because not everyone likes them. Ate it for several days, loved it, couldn’t get enough.
Was wondering if pineapple tidbits could be added if drained real well and dried off???
So glad you enjoyed it, Gayle. We haven’t tried this recipe with pineapple tidbits but that sounds like a delicious addition.
It looks so delicious, I know I’m going to make it the next time we are all together. I can’t wait, everyone is gone out of town and it makes to much for just 1 person. But I’ll definitely post when I make it.
Was looking for something more creamier. No matter how much you whip it with a mixer it will just make the curds smaller (not “smoother”) and ends up being almost gritty.
Sorry you didn’t enjoy the recipe as much as we do Jodi. Thanks for trying it.
Looks Delicious
Yummy
What if you do not like Cottage Cheese…Can I sub more Whip cream.
We have only tried this recipe as written, Paul. If you try it, let us know how it turns out.
This was just a terrible recipe!, way too many marshmallows! Will certainly noy make this again? Expensive to make as well.
Hi Rita, sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy this recipe. You can try reducing the number of mini marshmallows in it if you prefer that. :)
I did this one and another with dream whip , orange jello, coconut and pecans and can of fruit salad. Both are great
Yum, sounds delicious Linda!
